Instructional Technology Assistant

Job Description

Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range.

The individual in this position works closely with the Distance Learning and Faculty Development (DLF) Director of Online Learning and Instructional Designer(s) to assist faculty in using the Learning Management System (LMS) and other innovative technologies in online learning courses and traditional classroom instruction.  Assists and supports academic departments and faculty in the development of LMS courses and Web-based tools.  Assists faculty in the design and development of engaging, interactive, and instructionally sound courses.  Assists DLF help desk and online students with technology-related online course issues.  Helps evaluate innovative technologies that have potential value for teaching and learning. 

Reports to: Director of Online Learning 

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty Support (50%)

  • Provides individualized support to faculty in the use of instructional technology tools.
  • Works with faculty to implement instructional course delivery products.
  • Works with the Director of Online Learning and Instructional Designer(s) to maintain the quality and consistency of online course design as established by CSM standards for Web-based courses.
Training (20%)
  • Conducts one-on-one training and information sessions as requested by faculty.
  • Maintains all online trainings created by DLF to ensure they are up to date and accurate with developing technologies.
Technology Integration & System Support (15%)
  • Works with the Director of Online Learning on the integration of Brightspace information with the college’s network and integrated data system.
  • Works with the Director of Online Learning and Instructional Designer(s) in the design and use of interactive multimedia component instruction.
Research & Professional Development (15%)
  • Researches, evaluates, and makes recommendations for the adoption of instructional technology tools.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable on available and emerging instructional technologies through professional reading, attending conferences, participating in professional development activities (training and education), and participating in industry professional associations.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

Required Education and Experience:

  • Education – Associate’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education/experience in information technology. 

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Education – Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education/experience in information technology.  
  • Preferred – Experience working with a Learning Management System, preferably D2L Brightspace

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Functional knowledge of D2L Brightspace course management software, Web design, and multimedia. 
  • Work experience and proficiency in the following software packages: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access), Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Presenter, Adobe Acrobat, Articulate E-Learning, and Pinnacle Studio. 
  • Preferred experience with web programming languages such as JavaScript and CSS. 
  • Preferred working knowledge of instructional design principles and methods. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is mostly sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment.
