This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment in the Nursing department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Allied Health, Public Safety, Kinesiology & Child Development and the Director of the Vocational Nursing Program. The professor will teach a variety of Nursing courses, which may vary from semester to semester, and must be able to integrate the basic principles of nursing into both classroom and clinical instruction. The professor also must be able to assume responsibility for students in clinical facilities and establish and maintain communication between the facilities, its employees, and the College. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. The Merced College Licensed Vocational Nursing Program aims to prepare students for careers as professional Vocational Nurses by providing a continually-improving educational program that is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). This position has the opportunity to provide innovative and extensive outreach in the local community, and with our educational partners, to aid in the promotion of the nursing profession throughout the region and within the Merced Community College District. Area faculty are committed to helping students attain their educational goals by preparing students to take the National Licensure Examination, which is designed to prepare competent nurses for service in the community.

Allied Health, Public Safety, Kinesiology & Child Development Area: This area includes courses and programs in Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Sonography, Allied Health, Fire Sciences, Emergency Medical Care, Administration of Justice, Kinesiology, Health, Athletics, and Child Development.  
  • Teach courses in Vocational Nursing

  • Participate in the preparation and composition of reports

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g. submit grades on time to admissions and records
  • Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
  • Associate's degree from an acceptable accredited institution and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
  • Satisfy BVNPT "Instructor" requirements listed in the BVNPT "Vocational Nursing Practice Act with Rules and Regulations" guide, as follows:
    • Enrollment in, or completion of, a course in the principles of teaching
    • Hold a current California active license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an approved school OR a valid teaching credential OR have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing or psychiatric technician school within the last five years OR met community college or state university teaching requirements in California
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the last five years
  • Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Interview Information: Those applicants deemed most qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee which includes a 15-minute teaching demonstration on a selected topic.   Finalist interviews with district administrators will follow the same or next day. A limited number of candidates will be invited to interviews.
