The University of Maine Farmington is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Dean for the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education.

UMF is seeking an experienced and dynamic education leader to join the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education as the Associate Dean. The Associate Dean will report to the Associate Provost/Dean College of Education, Health, and Rehabilitation. Graduate Education has enjoyed considerable growth over the last several years and is poised for additional growth of academic programs in the coming months. The Division of Graduate and Continuing Education offers M.S.Ed programs in Early Childhood Education and Educational Leadership, as well as several certificate programs, including Educational Administration, Special Education Administration, Gifted and Talented, Math Leadership, Math Intervention Specialist, Math Coaching K-8 and 7-12, ELL, Special Education K-6 and 6-12 and Proficiency Based Education. Approval of a new Masters in Special Education is anticipated in the forthcoming months. The Division of Graduate and Continuing Education offers other professional programs and courses, including an online Special Education Alternative Route to Certification (SPARC) and Maine Mathematics Coaching Program, as well as individual graduate courses and professional development opportunities for educators. Working in collaboration with the Deans of Education and Arts and Sciences, as well as the Provost/VPAA, the Associate Dean sets the vision for graduate education and oversees implementation of graduate programs consistent with university and graduate education policy. Additionally, the Associate Dean will develop and implement strategies to support the expansion of graduate programs. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee graduate programs including degrees, certificates, and scheduling

  • Identify, develop, and coordinate external partnerships and collaborations including UMaine System partnerships, and, in collaboration with the Director of Educational Outreach, collaborations with local schools and industry

  • Supervise Director of Educational Outreach, graduate faculty, and administrative staff within Graduate and Continuing Education

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education

  • Collaborate with other offices and leaders across campus on matters pertaining to graduate education (e.g., Director of - Teacher Accreditation and Assessment, Admissions, Financial Aid, Marketing, Student Services)

  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders (e.g., accreditation bodies)

  • Develop and monitor graduate office budget

  • Monitor enrollments

  • Collaborate with academic division chairs on course scheduling and faculty duties

  • Support and respond to graduate student needs in accordance with UMF and Graduate Education policy

  • Serve as an academic advisor for graduate students

  • Develop and support systems for graduate student research

  • Regularly collaborate with graduate program coordinators to ensure continuity of policy implementation and address student and program needs

  • Interface with other graduate education administrators across UMaine System.

  • Attend Graduate Council meetings, Academic Leadership Committee meetings and serve on other committees as needed

  • Organize and facilitate Office of Graduate Studies meetings

  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs serving adult learners seeking credentials and/or degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level

  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean, VPAA, or President


Required: An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.). Experience teaching and advising at the university level. Progressively increased experience in leadership positions in higher education. Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate faculty, including adjunct and part-time faculty evaluations. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty and administrators in a student-centered environment. Ability to manage academic programs that employ face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities.

Preferred: Experience as a Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean or similar position. Deep understanding of graduate education, in particular education programs, as well as adult learning theory. Demonstrated ability to write grants and secure external funding.
