Departmental Overview

STEM Scholars Program at Berkeley (SSP@B) is a new independent academic program intended to increase opportunities for underrepresented minority and women students across STEM programs on campus. Participating departments include Bioengineering, Chemistry, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Molecular and Cell Biology, Nuclear Engineering, Integrative Biology, Mathematics, and Statistics.

SSP@B will meet the challenge of increasing student diversity in STEM through a strength-based approach that combines 1) UC Berkeley’s top-ranked doctoral graduate training programs, and 2) an undergraduate training program with an outstanding nation-leading track record of successfully sending students on to STEM doctoral programs. An important aspect of this program will be the coordination across our University bringing together departments from different colleges, each with different academic cultures and expectations.

The incumbent will serve as the Director for the SSP@B and hold responsibility for overall program development, implementation and management for a significant, independent academic support program. This work includes but is not limited to: planning, developing and administering specialized and complex programs and projects that are designed to enhance student success; formulating program strategies and goals; program development and implementation; planning, directing and controlling the program budget and other related resources; securing grants and additional funding; monitoring and evaluating program success; collaborating with internal and external colleagues and agencies.





Provide financial oversight and administrative management:

Manage financial resources; oversee program budgeting and participate in accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.




  • Under general direction from the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion and partnering Deans, develop, direct and administer an independent program with administrative and programmatic responsibility:

  • Develop and implement outreach programs for prospective high school students; coordinate campus visits by potential students; conduct outreach visits at local high schools; develop and implement program-specific admissions process; participate in selection of students to the program.

  • Develop and implement programming and curriculum for current and incoming UCB undergraduates including but not limited to: accelerated summer residential programs, research mentorships, paid internships, study-abroad experiences, and academic and personal development seminars/courses.

  • Provide programmatic oversight for all SSP@B programs; manage support for participating students such as housing, meals, field trips, group study sessions, community-building activities, and other enrichment programs; monitor and support student progress.

  • Develop and distribute program communications and documents including policy statements, marketing materials, forms, etc., and participate in public relation efforts.

  • Recruit, train, and/or supervise the work of graduate interns and paraprofessionals, staff mentors, advisors and others supporting SSP@B programs.

  • Facilitate efforts of partner departments and outside constituencies to ensure effective collaboration; work collaboratively with staff, faculty, administrators, alumni, and students to explore/research innovative approaches in meeting the needs of students; represent program to various constituencies; serve on committees representing the program.

  • Participate in strategic planning with program leadership.

  • Serve as primary academic counselor for SSP@Berkeley:

  • Provide multicultural academic counseling to freshmen and sophomore high school students.

  • Prepare college juniors and seniors for graduate and professional school applications.

  • Coordinate with participating colleges, departments, and partner institutions to resolve academic counseling concerns and advocate for SSP@B students.

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities and revenue streams.

  • Assess and improve program's effectiveness:

  • Monitor program success and recommend changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.

  • Work with faculty leadership to establish program objectives, and short- and long-term goals and strategies.

  • Coordinate annual reporting, gather data, draft narrative and reports for publication.

  • Additional:

  • Maintain professional knowledge and subject matter expertise; participate in professional conferences and trainings.

  • Provide advice and guidance to staff, faculty, administrators and alumni as needed.

  • Travel as needed including occasional overnight and weekends.

Required Qualifications




  • Academic background and experience in developing and administering STEM academic programs including significant experience in building student support services that attract, retain and develop exceptional, outstanding, diverse, inclusive undergraduate student populations.

  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources, fundraising, and financial principles and practices.

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills; ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills, persuasion, and leadership ability; demonstrated ability to achieve results in a diverse environment with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences, personality types and communication styles.

  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk management.

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects through to completion and implementing new processes in a higher education environment, preferably in the student services arena.

  • Knowledge and experience related to student services IT/systems.

  • Advanced skill in assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Experience in effectively using metrics to build a strong student support organization, including metrics related to building a diverse, exceptional, outstanding, and inclusive student body, professional development, student retention, etc.

  • Ability to effectively and persuasively represent the Campus.

  • Ability to fundraise and secure grants.

  • OTHER:

  • Ability to travel and work regular evenings and weekend hours.

  • Education/Training:
    Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

The annual salary range of the position is $90,000–$130,000, commensurate with experience.
