Position Overview

This position assists the School of Business Director of Study Abroad & International Outreach to promote and manage student involvement in study abroad, assists in development and implementation other international programs and initiatives, interfaces with other KU units, and engages with external partners.  The Program Specialist manages applications for School of Business scholarships for study abroad, tracks program budgets and expenses, drafts communication materials, and creates social media for international initiatives. This position may supervise student workers.

Job Description

60% Study abroad and international outreach program support – Provide support for programs and related events, with oversight of director.  Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist director to track and manage study abroad programs.

  • Coordinate communication with partner institutions and the KU Office of Study Abroad.

  • Promote study abroad opportunities to business students, including short-term programs, programs with international partner institutions, and other programs.  Responsibilities include advising students on study abroad, promoting scholarship opportunities, and coordinating with KU Office of Study Abroad.

  • Assist director in hosting international visitors to the School of Business.  Responsibilities include promoting exchange programs with partner institutions, advising visiting exchange students, and coordinating annual 10-day summer program for visiting students from the University of Costa Rica.

  • Assist director in planning of special events related to international programs, such as conferences, speaker events, and student co-curricular activities.

40% Administrative support – Provide a broad range of administrative support, including:

  • Manage study abroad scholarship processes, budgets, and expenses.

  • Provide administrative support to School of Business faculty leading short-term study abroad programs.

  • Track student participation in programs, events, and activities required for special distinctions.

  • Act as point of contact for other KU units, including International Affairs and KU international centers.

  • Draft communication materials and create reports on international programs, including social media content.

  • May hire, train and supervise student workers.

  • Additional duties as assigned by director.


Required Qualifications


  1. Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of related professional experience.

  2. Outstanding skills in written and oral communication as evidenced through application materials.

  3. Documented organizational, leadership, and/or teamwork skills as evidenced through application materials.

  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, as demonstrated on application materials.


Preferred Qualifications


  1. Degree in education, foreign language, international studies, or closely related field.

  2. International experience and/or competencies such as experience studying or working abroad, geographic area expertise, or foreign language competency.

  3. At least two years of experience in higher education working with students.

  4. Experience with relevant computerized financial and student services systems and software.
