DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: The School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

TITLE OF POSITION/RANK: Instructor of Art History (Tenure Track)

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Art & Design Department seeks a highly motivated candidate with a commitment to foundation-level teaching in art history within a larger studio-based program.  The successful candidate will teach introductory survey courses in both classroom and online formats. Teaching assignments will include, but are not limited to: Survey 1: Ancient to Medieval, Survey 2: Renaissance to Modern, and Survey 3: Art Since 1945. The successful candidate will actively participate in the development of a visual art & design curriculum focused on preparing students for academic transfer into degree programs in art history and/or studio art and design.  In addition to teaching a full-time load of 15 contact hours, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development, coordinate assessment of art history courses, advise part-time faculty, and contribute to departmental and campus activities that support the college mission.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  A Master’s degree in art and/or design history and one year of college-level teaching or related practical experience are required. All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of three years of college-level teaching or related practical experience are strongly preferred.  A minimum of three years of college-level teaching, preferably at the community college level, also preferred. A strong knowledge of curriculum development and assessment and an understanding of portfolio standards for students transferring to BFA programs preferred.  Candidates may specialize in any area of art history, although a background in modern and contemporary art preferred.  The successful applicant must demonstrate clear fluency in material for introductory survey courses. Experience in gallery management is highly desired. Assess student learning through demonstrated reflective practice, including assessment of student learning. This includes ongoing formative assessments, as well as official departmental assessment. Manage classes and learning environments through fostering a positive classroom-learning environment by presenting information in a way that is inclusive to all learners. Support learning through student engagement – incorporating pedagogical strategies such as active learning, authentic and problem-based activities, and other successful teaching strategies into classroom instruction. 


SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $64,841 plus excellent benefits.
