The University of South Dakota invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Nursing.

The Chair is the administrative head of a unit with more than 500 students, 40 faculty members, 16 career service employees, and is located on five sites across South Dakota. The Department of Nursing is housed in the School of Health Sciences (SHS) within the Division of Health Affairs, which is comprised of eleven collaborative departments and a medical school with a mutual vision for inter-professional education.

The Department of Nursing delivers a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a traditional pre-licensure, and RN-BSN tracks fully accredited by Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Opportunities for involvement in graduate programming are available in the Master of Public Health and PhD in Health Science programs.

Enrolling 2,500 students annually in bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs, the USD School of Health Sciences is a leader in interprofessional education and the second largest school at USD. The School of Health Sciences consists of ten academic programs: Addiction Counseling and Prevention, Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Public Health, and Social Work. In addition, within the SHS is the Center for Prevention of Child Maltreatment.

The Chair position is a 12-month full time administrative appointment with a rank of Associate or Full Professor. Salary commensurate with education and experience. The Chair should be a visionary leader able to provide effective management of the department’s resources, recognize and reward excellence, and promote accountability. The position will develop and assist with implementation of departmental, school, and university strategic plans. The Chair will effectively communicate with faculty and staff and establish and support strong working relationships with many and varied constituencies including the South Dakota Board of Nursing, national accrediting bodies, and several health care systems across the state. The Chair will also support the growing inter-professional education, service and research mission and faculty and student involvement in these endeavors.

The successful candidate will be doctorally prepared in nursing or related field and tenured or eligible for tenure. A master’s degree in Nursing is required. The candidate must be a SD Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or eligible for licensure in South Dakota and have a minimum of 5 years academic leadership and 10 years of professional experience.
