This is a tremendous opportunity for a visionary leader to join an enthusiastic and award-winning faculty to refine and enhance internationally recognized programs within the College of the Arts and Communication. The ideal candidate is engaging, interdisciplinary and highly collaborative in cultivating innovative approaches to program development and delivery, community engagement, and fundraising.

The next Dean is an accomplished leader and institutional citizen bringing a track record of successfully balancing departmental needs with the needs of the institution as a whole. The successful candidate is known for working across disciplines, and effectively collaborating and engaging various stakeholders within and outside the college as they develop cutting edge programs designed to meet the needs of today's students and employers.

The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the College, and reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides strategic leadership to the faculty and staff in all matters relating to curriculum and program development; accreditation, assessment and evaluation; recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students; and research, scholarship, grant-seeking and fundraising. This position also works in collaboration with the Office of Enrollment Management for the purpose of student recruitment and retention. The Dean will actively pursue grant funded research and programs, as well as fundraising for the College in concert with the Office of Institutional Advancement.


  • Advance the College by supporting activities that promote the reputation of its programs

  • Lead the college in the creation and implementation of strategic goals as well as mission and vision consistent with those of the university

  • Provide leadership in program development and continuous improvement

  • Recruit and retain faculty, staff and students

  • Work with faculty and professional staff to secure external funding to support programmatic initiatives and faculty research

  • Provide leadership for enhancing the fine and performing arts at the University and providing cutting edge technologies in communication

  • Seek new opportunities to support the University's role as a vital cultural resource for the region and state

Required qualifications:

  • Earned terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field represented in the College or related discipline

  • A minimum of five years' full-time teaching experience in a four-year college or university

  • Record of scholarship/creative activity and service commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor at the University

  • A minimum of five years' administrative experience in higher education at the level of department chair or higher

  • Commitment to academic excellence and the ability to develop, articulate, and accomplish a constructive vision for the College in cooperation with the faculty

  • Proven ability to foster use of technologies in teaching and learning

  • Commitment to diversity issues among faculty, staff and students

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats with internal and external constituencies

  • Demonstrated leadership style that fosters team-building and inclusive relationships among individuals with competing needs and wants

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experienced with accreditation

  • Demonstrated successful fundraising experience

  • Strong commitment to using technology in teaching and learning

  • Evidence of having worked successfully in a diverse environment

  • Evidence of being able to work collaboratively and engage with external stakeholders such as the regional arts community

About the College of the Arts and Communication:

The College of the Arts and Communication offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the departments of Art, Communication, and Music. With more than 60 full-time faculty, the William Paterson College of the Arts and Communications is proud to among an elite group of internationally recognized programs. The College also operates the University Galleries, the Shea Center for the Performing Arts, the international Center for Chinese Art, the technology-focused Center for New Art, a black box theatre, a radio station, television, film and animation studios, a sound engineering studio, an electronic music laboratory, and extensive post-production facilities in television, video and film.

The College offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the visual arts, communication, and music. Graduates of the College pursue and excel in careers with entertainment and record companies, television and radio stations, media corporations, jazz clubs, theater productions, design and animation studios, musical ensembles, and galleries throughout the world.

The College is student-success centric and as such, offers a wide variety of resources and facilities that prepare students for real-world career success. The College houses two new high definition broadcast television studios; new music performance recital and practice rooms; music recording and audio production facilities; an electronic music laboratory; film, animation, and graphic design studios; and state-of-the-art classrooms. Each of the College's programs provide students with an opportunity to study with award-winning faculty that includes working artists, designers, actors, directors, broadcasters, communication and public relations specialists, musicians, arrangers, composers, conductors, and more.

The Department of Art, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), is housed in The Power Art Center, which features 50,000 square feet of studio space and laboratories for photography, painting, printmaking, ceramics, wood design, and sculpture. It provides study in traditional art fields as well as animation and multimedia, graphic and interactive design, and sculpture and 3D design featuring 3D printers and a robot lab for carving.

The Department of Music, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, is well-known for offering a comprehensive program taught by award winning and well-connected faculty. The Department of Music offers BA, BM, MM degrees with specializations in performance areas, music education and music management; the department also supports an MBA with a concentration in music management. The department is the home of the nationally recognized Jazz Studies Program and houses the Living Jazz Archives. The program provides multiple opportunities for students to perform both on and off campus, including venues such as Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center in nearby New York City.

The Department of Communication offers BA and MA degrees. The undergraduate offerings include interpersonal communication, public relations and journalism, media studies and media production, and theatre and comedy. The recently implemented MA in Professional Communication focuses on corporate and strategic communication and uses of new media.

The student-run University radio station, WPSC-FM (88.7), received the prestigious 2018 Marconi Award for “Noncommercial Station of the Year” from the National Association of Broadcasters and was recognized as one of five finalists for Best College Radio Station in the U.S. in March 2019 at the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasters System Awards in New York City. The station recently won the NJ Student Radio Station of the Year Award.
