Job Description:

The Postdoctoral Fellow position will assist with CO2 capture research using amine scrubbing by providing power systems modeling and analysis. Work closely with group graduate students on CO2 capture models to match HRSG requirements to CO2 capture system stripping steam heat requirements.


Job Details:

General Notes

This is a temporary training position that may be renewed annually, for a maximum of 5 years.


  • Performs power systems modeling analysis in support of carbon capture research

  • Supports a front-end engineering design (FEED) study of a carbon capture process on a West Texas power facility with multiple power generators (NGCC and simple cycle)

  • Utilizes industry modeling tools including Aspen+ to estimate natural gas combine cycle (NGCC) system flue gas CO2 production rates

  • Estimates economics for deregulated power grid operations which include renewable power generation sources

  • Utilizes model(s) to estimate NGCC heat production rates in flue gas to determine heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) steam generation potential at various conditions

  • Performs HRSG modeling to estimate low-, medium-, and high-pressure steam production rates

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Thermal Power Systems Modeling, Mechanical Engineering, or related field earned within the last three years

  • Strong knowledge of power generation systems

  • Basic knowledge of power regulatory market(s) and rural electrification systems

  • Excellent written and oral communication

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to define problems, design studies to resolve problems, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to interpret results and analyses to ensure the validity of conclusions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of rural electrification markets

  • Ability to model and estimate HRSG steam generation capabilities and match to CO2 capture system steam requirements using modeling tools for energy and electrical systems
