Overview of the role:
The main responsibility of the individual would be to support and develop new and patentable products for the Performance Technologies and Industrial Chemicals (PTIC) businesses. This role would be flexible, and not tied to one specific business sector in the PTIC. This individual is expected to carry out experiments in synthesis as intended and application work as needed. The role will be primarily hands-on.
Less than 20% travel is expected and mainly would be to technical conferences, corporate headquarters and other Croda locations. It is very possible that this individual would present scientific papers at external and internal conferences as well as to customers, directly at their locations.
The role will report to the Research Team Leader – Synthesis, and be mentored by other senior technical members in the PTIC RD team.
Apply technical knowledge to develop new and existing products to meet market needs which consist of solving both complex and straightforward problems.
Design and carry out laboratory experiments. Review the results and seek answers to problems encountered through collection of data and investigation. Propose how to proceed with next experiment/stage of project.
Communication is mainly verbally within research group and through e-mail and written technical reports to the rest of the business in which complex scientific information is presented in appropriate form for the audience.
Arrange and carry out plant trials, liaising when necessary with other technical and commercial teams.
The role carries no line management responsibility. However it may be necessary to supervise/demonstrate to students/less experienced staff at times.
Expected to suggest most viable development routes in projects that can either be complex or straightforward. If they are not sure then they will go to line manager for advice. Decisions will be taken in conjunction with the line manager.
Responsible for planning and running multiple projects and carrying out experiments of varying complexity to deliver new products on time to the business.. Typically projects can range from a couple of days to six months
Expected to come up with creative solutions to problems within a designed area but is restricted by the core science. Encouraged to come up with creative ideas for new projects or within projects.
Expected to enhance knowledge of technology area and relevant scientific techniques to continuously improve research capability.
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
Good experimentalist with ability/experience in running research projects.
Ability to progress multiple projects simultaneously to successful conclusions under own initiative.
Creative and tenacious with good planning and problem solving skills
Good written communication skills, numerate, attention to detail.
Ability to interact constructively within department and with other departments
Adaptable around changing project requirements and priorities.
Appreciation of IP and regulatory issues
Role specific conditions:
Must be able to lift ~40 lbs for the job
Experiences in organic synthesis; good understanding of analytical;
Good mechanical aptitude, and hands-on lab skills;
Good presentation, and verbal and written English language skills;
Good understanding of surfactant products and related applications;
Experience in one or more techniques: alkoxylation, ester & amide condensation reactions;
Polymerization (Emulsion or Solution with Acrylic / Vinyl monomers) experience is desirable;
Experience in both synthesis and applications;
