This Postdoctoral Research Associate will employ first-principles density functional theory methods and Machine Learning techniques to develop a new class of 2D materials for energy-storage applications, in close collaboration with both theoretical and experimental groups at the University of Maine (UMaine) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
This postdoc will work with project PIs to: plan and conduct first-principles calculations to predict new 2D materials for energy storage; develop advanced machine learning models for the fast prediction of materials properties; help building the research collaboration partnership between UMaine and ORNL; publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at professional meetings; mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers as appropriate; and perform other reasonably related duties as assigned. Typical hiring range for this position is $48,000 to $52,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

A Ph.D. in Theoretical/Computational Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or other closely related disciplines;
More than three years of practical experience in density functional theory calculations, using VASP or other plane-wave codes;
A strong background in solid state physics.
Good knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics of materials;
Basic level of understanding in machine learning;
Some experience in computer programming, preferably in Python;
Excellent written communication skills evidenced through a record of scholarly publications and excellent oral communication skills evidenced through a record of professional presentations;
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers.
