About the Opportunity:
The Director of Experiential Education at the Roux Institute reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Portland, Maine. Using innovative and creative approaches, the Director is responsible for the development and oversight of a rich experiential education experience within a unique environment that features co-location with employer partners, close collaboration with the corporate environment in Maine and northern New England, and a robust research program that is at the interface of life science, medicine, engineering, and data visualization. The Roux Institute is also charged with experimenting with educational modalities that can strengthen and enhance our learners' experience and positioning for the workforce of tomorrow. The director should be a highly creative self-starter to work in this new educational organization. A core responsibility is to identify and intensively integrate experiential opportunities into the entire academic portfolio at the Institute, and across the spectrum of learners served by the Roux Institute. The director will build a high-performing, learner-responsive and partner-focused team of experiential education professionals in order to deliver on Roux Institute goals.
The Roux Institute attracts diverse learners at various points in their educational and career pathways, such as recent college graduates (including those from Maine partner institutions and international students) as well as early/mid-career learners who are seeking additional competencies to support their career aspirations. Our students and trainees also include corporate employees undertaking learning within their company, as well as doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers. We also will attract undergraduate students from the Northeastern University campus network to undertake cooperative learning placements in Maine and across northern New England.
The Director works in collaboration with the experiential education infrastructure and other student experience leads within the Chancellor's Office, and the academic leaders in Northeastern's schools and colleges to identify and cultivate programmatic opportunities throughout the global Northeastern network. S/he works cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders to define the vision for experiential learning at the Institute, seeks opportunities for innovative experiential integration, and proposes and executes operational plans and an assessment strategy. S/he is knowledgeable in developing business plans and budgets to assist with successful, scalable, and sustainable implementation of the final program.
A Master's degree is required, with six to eight years of relevant higher education experience (such as enrollment management, student experience (advising and services), academic administration etc.) Strong presentation, process management, organization, short-term and long-range planning, analytic, skills, and the ability to supervise and set priorities are required. Excellent communication, interpersonal, student development and counseling skills are required. Customer service experience is essential. A successful candidate will be a creative team player with a strong work ethic, committed to actively contributing to the organization's welfare. Candidate must have a proven ability to multi-task independently and collaboratively across a complex organization in a fast-paced work environment. The candidate must (1) have strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint; (2) be able to exercise sharp critical thinking skills and sound judgment; (3) be detail oriented and have strong prioritization, time management, and follow-through skills; (4) have demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population.
