The University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center has an immediate need to hire a highly-qualified Assistant Research Professor to support our continued growth in the areas of additive manufacturing, composite material development and applications, bio-based materials and renewable energy. The purpose of this position is to provide support in evaluating and improving large scale additive manufacturing thermoplastic polymer composite processing. The Assistant Research Faculty candidate will support, plan, and conduct assigned and/or original research in a variety of research and development projects encompassing material sciences, manufacturing, and the engineering of composites and structures while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center.

Required:

  • PhD in related engineering field, polymer engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics, or a related discipline. 
  • Demonstrated active research interest. 
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in polymer rheology. 
  • Demonstrated 5-7 years’ post-graduation experience in an equivalent academic department, in industry, or during postdoctoral research in academic and or industrial setting. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience advising and directing student research.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet constant deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with industry members.

Preferred:

  • Prior research experience in experimental and or computational rheology of polymers and complex fluids including rheological aspects of polymeric composites and bio polymeric systems. 
  • Deep knowledge of the core of Polymer Physics and Engineering and research interests in advanced manufacturing processes and processing structure property relationships. 
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer reviewed journals.
