Position Overview

A full-time Postdoctoral Researcher will be hired to dedicate 12 months each year (100% effort) to the Kindergarten children Acquiring Words through STORYbook reading (KAW Story) project. KAW Story is an NIH-funded preliminary clinical trial to develop interactive book reading as an effective approach for teaching new words to kindergarten children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The project will be collecting data from two more cohorts of children and analyzing and disseminating the results. The postdoctoral researcher will oversee and assist with study recruitment and scheduling tasks, administration of study evaluation/eligibility tasks, administration of vocabulary treatment tasks, and administration of post-treatment outcome tasks with kindergarten children participating in the KAW Story project. The postdoctoral researcher also will oversee and assist with data entry, data scoring, data maintenance, and data integrity (e.g., reliability checks) in our REDCap database. The postdoctoral researcher will oversee and assist with data analysis, dissemination (e.g., presentations, publications), and future study planning (e.g., grant applications).

The position will start summer or fall 2021. The position will be renewable for up to one additional year, pending satisfactory performance and continued grant funding.

This position will be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as deemed by supervisor.


Job Description

  • (30%) Collaborate with grant statisticians and principal investigator to analyze research data. Collaborate with the research team to disseminate the research findings through presentations and publications. Collaborate with the research team to plan future studies.
  • (20%) Train and monitor research assistants to administer study-specific vocabulary outcome measures and to administer and score standardized clinical tests to kindergarten children. Administer and score study-specific vocabulary outcome measures and standardized clinical tests to kindergarten children when research assistants are not available.
  • (20%) Train and monitor research assistants in providing vocabulary treatment to kindergarten children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Provide the vocabulary treatment to kindergarten children with DLD when research assistants are not available.
  • (20%) Train and monitor research assistants in scoring and entering all research data into the REDCap database. Monitor and audit the completeness and accuracy of the data in the REDCap database. Extract data from the REDCap database for statistical analysis.
  • (10%) Work with school and clinical partners to recruit participants. Provide information to and answer questions from potential participants. Train and oversee research assistants in performing these same tasks. Work with participants to schedule research sessions.

Position Requirements

  • This position will be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as deemed by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, SLPD, EdD) in speech-language-hearing, psychology, linguistics, education, human development, implementation science, public health, or related field.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: clinical research, language development in children, children with developmental language disorders, speech-language pathology as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a research team as evidenced by application materials.
  • Previous research experience as evidenced by application materials.
  • Previous experience maintaining a database as evidenced by application materials.
  • NOTE:

    To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous research experience with children.
  • Previous experience with children with DLD or other language impairments.
  • Previous research with community partners (e.g., schools).
  • Previous experience analyzing data and disseminating findings.
  • Previous experience with REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture).
