Job Summary

Overview
The Department of Geography at the University of Utah, in a funded collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station, is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in Geospatial Data Science. The selected applicant will join a collaborative team of geographers, forest operations and engineering experts, and wildland fire scientists developing GIS and remote sensing-driven solutions for improving wildland firefighter safety. Wildland firefighters routinely put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of others, and this position provides an opportunity to engage in innovative scholarship that will have direct impacts on the well-being of firefighters. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent PhD graduate eager to apply and grow their skills in areas such as geospatial data science, GIS, remote sensing, big data analysis, visualization, and machine learning.

Timing
This position is funded for a minimum of two years, with potential extension to a third year depending on the availability of funding. The anticipated start date for this position is approximately August 1st, 2021, but this is flexible.

The Department of Geography has wide-ranging faculty expertise within and beyond the geospatial realm and is housed in one of the campus’s newest and most impressive facilities.

Depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic at the anticipated start date, it may be possible to begin this position remotely, but relocation to Salt Lake City is expected.
