GENERAL PURPOSE
This position involves the planning, coordination and implementation of programs and activities for the Child Study Center. Under general supervision of the Director of Child Study Center Program, the Child Study Center Specialist III assists the Child Study Center Site Coordinator in providing programs and services including compliance with Community Care Licensing, legal policies, and regulations. The Child Study Center Specialist III leads the work of Child Study Center Specialist II, student apprentices, volunteers, and families as assigned. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity is required to address the needs of children, families, and students in the program. Public contact is extensive, primarily involving children, their family and/or other guardians and college staff for the purpose of exchanging program information.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Child Study Center Specialist III is distinguished from a Child Study Center Specialist II and a Child Study Center Specialist I in that the Child Study Center Specialist III is expected to have specialized knowledge and more responsibility in the areas of leadership and curriculum planning.

Essential Functions

  • Direct, oversee, plan, implement and evaluate the children's program, including the environment, daily schedule, play-based curriculum, and positive guidance to support each child's developmental stage and individual needs
  • Plan, implement and maintain a classroom environment that supports children's engagement, positive identity, and recognition of unique family cultures
  • Partner with families through an equity lens, support home language and culture, celebrate diversity, and incorporate anti-bias curriculum practices
  • Oversee and conduct ongoing observation, assessment, and documentation processes of children's development and complete developmental profiles twice a year, at minimum and child portfolios as required and results used to inform curriculum
  • Lead by modeling best practices for Child Study Center Specialists, and student apprentices by facilitating positive guidance techniques for children's social and emotional development while maintaining children's dignity with respectful interactions
  • Develop positive, trusting relationships with families through effective communication and ongoing feedback on children's progress
  • Collaborate with the Child Study Center team and Program Director to identify and address health and social service needs of children and families
  • Meet with families to discuss potential special needs assessments and share the referral process and importance of early intervention
  • Meet with the early intervention team to support children and families with special needs and/or developmental delays
  • Lead in planning for inclusion of children with special needs, providing accommodations and offering support in all developmental domains
  • Initiate and implement in-service trainings, family engagement activities, and program events
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, licensing and state rules, laws and regulations, and demonstrate proper procedures for program equipment and supplies
  • Communicate and interact with positive, effective, respectful language when engaging and working with children and adults
  • Provide guidance and support to Child Study Center Specialists, student assistants, students, and volunteers
  • Collaborate and support ECE faculty in supervising, mentoring, and evaluating student apprentices, as well as collaborating with students in planning and implementing curriculum assignments
  • Exchange information with families, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers regarding center policies and procedures
  • Stay abreast of current research and best practices related to child development theories, teaching strategies, materials, and resources
  • Participate in approved professional development activities 21 hours per year to stay updated on permit issued by California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, current ECE practices and technologies
  • Along with the Site Supervisor, recommend and purchase necessary supplies, materials, equipment, and food to maintain inventory
  • Utilize databases and computer software for data entry, enrollment, reporting, correspondence, and preparation
  • Uphold the National Association for the Education of Young Children's (NAEYC) professional ethics, confidentiality, and collegiality in problem-solving
  • Lead and direct other staff as required
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned

Requirements & Desirables


REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
  • Child Development Master Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (or the qualifications to apply)
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or a closely related field
  • Minimum three years of successful experience teaching children 0-5 years of age in a center-based child development program
  • Experience supervising and training the work of child development center staff in a center-based setting; OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience, AND
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity-minded practices in support of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, college staff, and community members.

Other Licenses & Certifications:
  • Current CPR and Pediatric First Aid
  • 15 hours of Health & Safety training as required by licensing
Or ability to obtain prior to start date.

Desirable Requirements:
  • Experience with Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) tool
  • Experience with Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3 and Ages and Stages Questionnaire- Social Emotional tools
  • Experience applying the strategies of Pre-K-3rd CLASS in educator-child interactions, including Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support

Please note: Children's Center Instructional Permits obtained prior to February 1997 are considered equivalent to the Child Development Teacher's Permit (Child Development Permit Matrix). Possession of a Site supervisor Permit or a Children's Center Supervision Permit and bilingual ability in a language other than English are desirable for positions in this classification.

  • Knowledge of the most recent iteration of the California Learning Foundations

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  • In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance and Child Abuse Index Services clearances.
  • California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  • DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. CLASSIFICATION CATEGORYEmployees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA)Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues or charitable contributions. Salary Grade: CSEA 122
Starting Salary Range: $40.31 - $44.43 per hour (step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000
