Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Economics Department at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking to fill a position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. This person also will serve as Associate Director of the MS Program in Applied Economics. This is a full-time 12-month non-tenure track faculty position with a preferred start date of February 27, 2023 and no later than July 1, 2023. Initial appointment will be through May 22, 2024 with renewal subject to review of candidate’s performance and available budgetary resources. Salary range is $100,000-$125,000.
Administrative Responsibilities: The Associate Director will work collaboratively with the Executive Director to help administer all aspects of the program, as outlined below.
- Admissions: The Associate Director will work with the Executive Director and program staff on the 3 distinct admissions cycles per year, to review applications and make admissions recommendations.
- Student Advising: The Executive Director and Associate Director will serve as the faculty advisers for students in the program.
- Curriculum Implementation, Evaluation, and Development: Our program currently offers 16 different courses – 5 core courses, and 11 elective field courses. The Associate Director will work with the Executive Director, our faculty, and the Economics Department leadership to help evaluate the current courses, and to continue refining and developing the program’s curriculum.
- Faculty Recruitment, Support, and Evaluation: The Associate Director will work with the program staff, the Executive Director, and the Economics Department leadership to recruit, support, and evaluate the MS program instructors.
- Student Placement and Alumni Relations: The Associate Director will contribute to the placement efforts on behalf of our students. This work will be done in collaboration with our program staff, the Executive Director, the University of Maryland’s Career Center, the Economics Department’s Undergraduate Career Advising Staff, and the many employers in our program’s network. The placement work will include student advising, relations with employers, and participation in placement/recruiting events. The Associate Director will also work with the program staff and the Executive Director to maintain constructive relations with our program’s alumni.
- Supervision of Program Staff: The program has 2 program coordinators – one for each location. The Associate Director will be expected to assume supervisory responsibility for at least one of the program coordinators after one year in the position.
Teaching Responsibilities: The Associate Director will teach 3 or 4 evening courses per year in the program. The Associate Director, like the Executive Director, will be expected to teach sections of core courses that students take at the outset of the 10-course program. Depending on the Associate Director’s expertise and the needs of the program, these will be core courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and/or Statistics and Applied Econometrics.

PhD in economics.
Experience:
- Equivalent of four years of teaching experience.
- Some previous experience with administrative responsibilities and/or departmental service.

STEM-designated MS in Applied Economics program are offered on our main campus in College Park, and also in our Washington, DC location near DuPont Circle. The program is an evening program in both locations.

Hours: This is a full-time professional track (non-tenure track) faculty position.
Classes meet Monday-Thursday evenings between the hours of 6:30 and 9:30 PM. The Associate Director will teach 3 or 4 courses per year, with the rest of his or her effort devoted to administrative responsibilities, as described above. On non-teaching days, Monday – Thursday, the Associate Director will be expected to be physically present in either the College Park or the DC office 3:00-7:00 PM.
A few times per year, the Associate Director will help lead information sessions and orientation sessions, and will attend other department and program events, some of which also take place in the evening. Most meetings with UMD colleagues and other requirements will be weekday afternoons.
