Position Summary Information


The Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic University located in Silicon Valley, seeks applicants for a full-time lecturer to teach courses in Business Law (BUSN 85) in our undergraduate program beginning in the winter or spring term of the 2015-2016 academic year. In addition to teaching, the individual will also serve as the Course Coordinator for the course. The Course Coordinator provides curriculum oversight, coordination, and support for all faculty teaching BUSN 85. The Coordinator works closely with the course instructors as well as the Undergraduate Business Programs Office and the Faculty Director of Undergraduate Business Programs to help assure that learning objectives are met and that the course is up-to-date in terms of content and pedagogy; the Coordinator also participates in faculty recruitment, scheduling, and evaluation.
This is a full-time appointment. The full-time teaching load is 7 courses per academic year – taught over 3 academic quarters.

Basic Qualifications

JD degree (required).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a business field such as commercial, financial, or intellectual property law.
Teaching experience at college level.


•Teach assigned sections of BUSN 85
•Review course content, curriculum and textbook(s) for updates/changes
•Work with dean’s office to recruit and hire faculty (with consultation and approvals)
•Train new faculty on curriculum and LSB policies/procedures
•Coordinate BUSN 85 faculty meetings and discussions
•Work with Undergraduate Business Programs Office to develop course schedules and provide instructor support
•Work with dean’s office to develop and maintain accreditation metrics for BUSN85

BUSN 85 Business Law
BUSN 85 was introduced in the Leavey School of Business undergraduate curriculum in 2013-14 as a required core course for all undergraduate Business majors at Santa Clara University. BUSN 85 is normally targeted to students in their sophomore year. Seventeen sections of the course are planned for the 2015-16 academic year.
BUSN 85 Course Description: This course is designed to give the student an overview of the primary substantive areas affecting business transactions, including the law of contracts, torts, employment, and crimes. It is intended to make the student aware of fundamental legal principles and their application in the business context. Prerequisite: BUSN 70 (Contemporary Business Issues)
BUSN 85 learning objectives: After taking the class, students will be able to
1) recognize and define the basic vocabulary of the law specific to business;
2) identify and describe the substantive legal principles governing business transactions;
3) relate business issues to relevant areas of American law and regulation;
4) prepare critical analyses of legal issues in a business context;
5) clearly and effectively communicate the results of legal analyses of business issues;
6) identify and analyze legal and ethical issues in the business context.
